What is Beta-Alanine?
Beta-alanine, or 3-aminopropionic acid, can be defined as a naturally occurring beta-amino acid. It is also a component of the histidine dipeptides carnosine and anserine, as well as vitamin B5. Structurally, beta-amino acid is a hybrid between the potent neurotransmitters L-glycine and GABA. This may be the reason consumers often claim to experience a caffeine-like response after taking it.
The human body can produce beta-alanine in three unique ways. First, it can be released during the breakdown of histidine dipeptides like carnosine or anserine. Second, it can be formed in the body as a secondary byproduct of a reaction that converts L-alanine to pyruvate. Lastly, it can be formed during normal digestion when your intestinal microbes remove a carbon atom from L-aspartate.
When you consume a beta-alanine dietary supplement, it will pass from your bloodstream into your skeletal muscles. Once it enters a skeletal muscle cell, it binds with the essential amino acid L-histidine to form the dipeptide carnosine.
What Does Beta-Alanine Do?
Many athletes have found that taking a supplement of beta-alanine on a regular basis can raise their muscle carnosine concentrations. In fact, recent studies have shown that supplementation with beta-alanine can increase muscle carnosine concentrations by up to 58 percent in just four weeks, and 80 percent in 10 weeks. How Can Beta-Alanine Help My Workout Performance & Physique?

When it comes to your physical workouts, beta-alanine has been found to be most effective for supporting exercises that last longer than 60 seconds. In one of the first published studies on beta-alanine and human athletic performance, participants received either a placebo, 20g per day of creatine monohydrate, 800mg of beta-alanine four times a day, or the same dose of beta alanine plus the 20g of creatine monohydrate. During a four minute all-out cycling test, maximum power output was found to have significantly increased in the two test groups that received beta-alanine. The most improvement was noted during the first and fourth minutes of cycling.
On a similar note, researches in the U.K. presented similar evidence on the benefits of consuming a beta-alanine supplement. The study found that after just four weeks of consuming six grams of beta-alanine per day, amateur boxers could increase their punch force 20 times over! The study found that when long rest periods were provided between sets (two to five minutes), the effects of beta-alanine were significant.
When Should Women Take Beta-Alanine? Since beta-alanine can provide athletes with an acute stimulant response, it is a good supplement to consume pre-workout for women. If you already take a pre-workout supplement, you may be consuming beta-alanine anyway.
